Wait, what?

From Terry Koshan's Sun column today:

...reports indicate that former Leafs coach Paul Maurice, who was fired 3 1/2 weeks ago, either has met with Florida Panthers GM Jacques Martin or will do so at the NHL scouting combine in Toronto this weekend, regarding the Panthers' coaching vacancy.

OK, explain this to me line I'm an MLSE board member.

Why can the Panthers talk to fired ex-Leaf Paul Maurice, but the Leafs can't talk to fired ex-Panther Joe Nieuwendyk?

  1. Nieuwendyk resigned from his position. Maurice got canned

  2. According to the Star yesterday:

The committee was rebuffed by the Florida Panthers when it asked for permission to talk with Joe Nieuwendyk, even though he's been fired by the club. Nieuwendyk's contract expires July 1.

Not saying they couldn't be wrong, of course.

  3. I'd hate to see MLSE stand in the way of Maurice working his magic on another club.

With three post-season appearances in eleven years, I'd encourage MLSE to help Maurice land a coaching gig with one of the Leafs' rivals as quickly as possible - the Leafs need all the help they can get.

On a slightly more serious note, one has to wonder if MLSE couldn't have made Maurice's availability to Florida contingent on being able to speak with Nieuwendyk. A little quid-pro-quo never hurt anybody...

That would apparently make too much sense.

  5. Here's the serious difference - Nieuwendyk's contract expires July 1st, so Florida saying no might be out of spite to Joe more than anything. He won't be on the payroll in a month.

Maurice's contract still has an entire year left on it. It's financially in the Leafs best interest for him to find a new team to work for... Florida or anyone else for that matter.

  6. Steve, that makes sense. If you have it right, then the Leafs are making a smart financial decision.

On the other hand, I'd argue that the Leafs getting some traction in this GM search debacle should be a higher priority than saving money. I still would have liked to see them play some hardball here.
